20 Years After

The Price girls finally have a small reunion in West Africa almost 25 years after they first arrived in Kilanga. How have they changed and how have they remained the same? Which character do you identify with and which do you despise?

As they reflect back on their experience, how do they feel about their father? In what ways could their feelings about their father be viewed as hypocritcal?

I would have to say i dispise rachel I think she has changed the least out of all the price girls she still only cares about herself while Leah and Adah are discussing american influence in Africa she thinks they are being selfish because they dont ask about the equitorial.Leah i think has changed the most because she went complete opposite from her childhood she was a good baptist girl and now she is a living as an African native would. Adah has changed alot she cant read the way she used to and she dosent have a limp but deep down she wishes she was the same. I probly like Leah the best. The girls seemed hypocritical in the the sense thier father died and one of them said that was the way he wanted to die but then started to say how mean he was. Adah even said she wanted to burn Nathan while he was in his bed but didnt cause her mom was in the same bed

I beleive that Leah and Adah are the most changed actually Ada becasue she as become like a whole new person... She doesnt walk with a limp anymore and doesnt read the way she used to...Leah has also changed a lot by the fact that she stayed in Africa and married anatole... but also she has changed and become more open minded and has kind of strayed from the way she grew up. Rachel on the other really hasnt changed much at all i think that she really only cares about herslf despite everything she has been through i hoped that Rachel would change and grow and learn that everything isnt always about her. i think that it is interesting how she is all caught up in herself.

on the note of their father i think they loved him and respected the fact that he was their father,Adah said she wanted to burn him while he was sleeping but she didnt because her mother was in the same bed. after he dies they are talking about him and refer to the fact that he ws mean and was all in it for himself... maybe thats why rachel is the way she is.... they do it for the looks and not how it makes them feel... Rachel goes to church and things like that but does it really make her happy or does she do it because it looks good same with Nathen idk...... they say that they loved him and all that but then they are talking about how they wanted him to die it doesnt make sence...

I think that Adah and Leah are the ones who changed the most and Rachel was the one who changed the least. Adah doesnt limp anymore she looks like a perfectly normal person but inside she feels like the same old Ada. Leah got married with Anatole and had kids When she was younger she belived everything her father said was right and she wanted to be just like him but know she is more open minded and has really matured. The person i despise the most would have to be Rachel because she still thinks that everything is about her. She is still selfish and she wants her sisters to ask her about her buisness so she can brag about it and tell them how much money she has. I like Leah the most because she has been through a lot and keeps going. she doesnt give up. The Price girls say that they loved there father and they feel bad for what happend to him. Then they started saying that Their father was mean. Adah said she wanted to burn him while he was in bed but she didnt because her mother was in bed next to him.

by far rachel didnt really change at all, leah and adah are the ones that the most. adah has improved her limping on the outside but on the inside she still feels the same. she feels the same. anatole and leah got married and had some kids...when she was younger she would be by her fathers side the whole time but now she has grown up a little bit and isnt so much on her dads side. rachel is probably the most self centerd and concieded person in the book, she becomes very annoying beucause she is thinking about her self before anything else and it just gets old.

I think that they really haven't changed all that much. They still believe in the same things that they did when leaving Kilanga. Rachel still is self centered and is consumed by her hotel business. Leah now lives in Angola, where she has been trying to move to for some time now. Adah discovers the life history of viruses, since she has no childern of her own she takes on the viruses as if they were her own childern. Orleanna lives in Sanderling Island and Adah visits her once a month. While the girls and Orleanna were back in Africa together they came upon a women from Bulungu which is by Kilanga. They ask the lady if she has heard any news from Kilanga and the women says it does not exisit. I think this is ironic because this place is what changed them all. Kilanga is where they in a since found themselves and went different ways to live different lifes, and now it no longer exisits. I despise Rahchel the most she seems to not really have any feelings about what's going on or what has happened, like Ruth Mays death. Leah I can identify with the most because she fought for what she believed in and never gave up hope.

ok well i think Leah changed the most deffinatly beacause she turned her whole life around the opposit of what she once was ..a good girl that loved church and she lives waay diferent now...in the congo with barely anything.Leah and Adah are starting to understand things more better... like asking questions an less selfish. rachele still acts like she doesnt care about anybody and that she is all that matters. So to me, i dont like her the most out of the price family. Adah i dont think changed that much, but she did more than rachelle atleast,i think she comes in second with changing in a good way.she cant read as good and doesnt act the same and the way she walks has changed but she likes bein back the way she use to be. Out of all of them i think i like leah, because she's the good girl. Yea ide call them hypocritical most definatly.. they say one thing but when he's gone its a complete different story like they wanted him to die..but then again they did love him.

Rachel is the one that has changed the least Adah and Leah on the other hand have completely changed. For example Leah has more or less turend her back on her fathers beliefs its almost ironic Leah has become exactly what her father was trying to "save" after spending so many years aspiring to be just as her father was she has chosen to live like a native of kilanga. Adah has changed alot as well. She no longer walks with a limp...unfortunately i think she lost a part of her identity she no longer reads backwards or reverses her sntences i get the sence that she is happy with her life but secretly she wishes she had never changed. Rachel however is by far the one charecter in this novel that i dispise the most and the one who has changed the lesat she still self-centered and materialistic Although I still find my self agreeing with her when she said that there father was as mean as a snake and got what he deserved.

Well, Racheal is still stuck up and i never really liked her that much to begin with. she has changed some too though, in that she didnt stay with axelroot and had like 2/3 other marriages.
I always liked Leah because she adapted to the congo more than the other girls by learning to hunt and provide. She became an African and didnt stay white in the congo.

Deschamps15 said...

Rachel is the still same stuck up girl. only caring about herself, and how well off she is. I think Leah matured the most, and Adah became more independant. I think Adah changed the most. She corrected her limp, doesn't read backwards, and doesn't depend on other people to do things for her.

When the girls were talking about their father's death, it didn't really phase them that much. I mean sure, their dad died, but I don't think they cared that much, because they really did not like him. Adah wanted to burn him, but she didn't want to hurt her mom. It seemed like even their mom didn't care to much that Nathan had passed away, she was fed up with him, and had moved on. It doesn't seem like they cared at all, but you know deep down they did. I think they just don't want to show their feelings because he was so mean to them, and wasn't a good father or husband at that.

After the reunion in Africa i think that Adah is most changed girl. She has gotten rid of her limp and has became successful in her line of work. Leah also changed some what but in a different way. She stayed with anatole in africa and has truly became an "African". She has the mind of an african and obviously lives like one. Rachel is still the same old Rachel. She runs her hotel and doesnt care bout anyone but herself, even her brother in law Anatole.
I really connect with Adah. she overcomes a huge disability and turns her time in africa into a learning experence. I probably dispise Rachel the most because she is just rachel...
The way Nathan died was really fitting to what he deserved. but i was kinda set back by the way the sisters commented on his death. Leah always acted like she really loved him but she said it was the way he wanted to die and i dont belive that.

Snyder said...

I believe that leah and adah have made the most change. Racheal is still the stuck up better than everybody type of girl, she didnt really change much. Leah and adah both changed awhole lot, for instance adah finally stopped feeling sorry for herself and went on to college. I dont think that they really cared that there father died because they all thought he was mean.Adah said she wanted to burn nathan but didnt becuase her mother was in bed also.

Most of the girls remained the exact same with the only difference being they have "grown". I still think Rachel is my worst character in the book because she does not have a grip on reality and she is a very selfish person. Leah still has a passion for Africa and in a way has become African herself. She continues to live there and serve "her" country. Adah has changed for the good. She is no longer cripple and is able to walk. She is in America trying to find cures for diseases. All of the girls miss their dad but in a way knew he would die. This is somewhat hypocritical because they say how much they love their dad, but also how much they wanted him to die. Then they go back to saying this is how he wanted to die. In a way this does not make any sense because it is unclear to what the girls really think about their father.

Rachel is definitely the daughter who has drifted the least after a quarter-century in Africa. However in some ways you could say she has learned to accept Africa and its people. Leah has changed dramatically form her Dad’s tag-along to an African wife. Through all that change she has still lovingly kept her heart for her Dad. Adah has also changed a lot, she has lost her crookedness and with that her whole identity. She seems almost always on a constant struggle for balance in her new life. Adah remains one thing constant, and that is her connection with Leah. Selfishly, I would probably relate closest with Rachel. Honestly I do not despise any character. If I had to choose my least favorite I would have to say Adah because I often feel she is trying to get the best of both worlds. I cannot despise Rachel though, because truthfully I would live that way myself.

Conversing about their father they all agree on the fact that they loved and respected him, but at the same time seemingly wanted him to pay for what he did. Adah tells her mother later that she would have burned her father had her mother not been in the same bed. I feel that all of the Price women could relate to this thought and hatred.

Mike Bansmer said...

Leah, and Adah have gone through more of a evolution of small changes and improvements i would say. Now you might be saying what. but if you look at it deeper, leah is still drawn to a strong man wiht unwaivering devotion to his cause, althought he dose so in a more sencitive tactfull way then her father. Adah who i think has changed the most has a whole new body, and lost a little of her crooked thoughts, as she confesses to us. But she still thinks of her self as different.
As for Rachel she still is a stuck up snob, but makes for some good reading and a chuckle every once in a while, and to tell you the truth this book needs a little more of that.

I think that the 3 girls have changed, but in some ways they remained the same. Leah changed because her whole life is different, now she lives like a normal African girl. She also doesn’t believe any of the things her father taught her when she was little. Rachel also changed in her economic status, now she is richer; she is the owner of the Equatorial. Her behavior and personality remained the same. She still only thinks about her. Adah changed because she is completely cured of her limp. Now she is an epidemiologist working for the Center for Disease Control. But she remained the same in the inside. She misses her old way of reading and witting.
I think I identify with Adah the best.
The girls seem hypocritical because they were saying they were sorry for their father and the way he died, but at the same time they were talking about all the things he did wrong.

The girls have definitely all matured. Leah has children and identifies herself as an African woman. She's still the same because she's stubborn and stands up for what she believes in. Adah became a doctor, lost her slant, and she finally started talking more frequently. Although she changed, she still sees things differently than other people do. Rachel got married several times and inherited a hotel from her last husband. She's still as vain as she's always been. I identify with Leah the most. She doesn't let people get in the way of what she wants. I really don't like Rachel at all. She's too conceited and a royal B word at times.

When they talk about their father, they express feelings of empathy for him. This is EXTREMELY hypocritical. When they were children, they couldn't stand him. It doesn't make sense that they could go from almost hating him to feeling bad for him.

I do not see much change in rachel. I do think that Adah has changed the most. She quite feeling so sorry for herself and moved back to the United States where she began college, got her disabilities corrected and started studying diseases. I would find myself most like Adah, I would have left the congo and furthered my education. It seems as though the girls do not have much remorse for thier father's death. It is hypocritcal because they are angry at thier father for not caring about others feelings and yet when he dies they have no remorse for him.

All of the Price girls have grown up and lead completely different lives, however, they still have many of the same views that they did when they left Kilanga. For example, Rachel still hates the real Africa, so she has created her own world to live in, The Equitorial. Rachel still remains self-absorbed and thinks she is 'above' Africans. Adah is different because she is no longer obsessed with her disability, as she is now 'normal', and talks as well. Leah has changed her views about religion, her father and Africa since she first arrived, but she actually did towards the end of their time in Kilanga. I identify the most with Leah. She actually cares about others and is not satisfied with the corrupt government. She does not accept the lies that are told in the news, and sees how Africa is affected by corruption. I do not like Rachel because she is close-minded and is not interested in helping others even though she has the money to do so.
The girls think that there father more or less got what he deserved. None of them feel bad, and Leah and Adah make jokes about his death. I think that it is right for them to feel this way, he was a horrible person and deserved no better. However, it is slightly hypocritical because Leah first shared the same views about Africans as he, and Rachel still thought the native people were heathens, who were not as good as whites

Adah changed the most, i believe because she has gotten rid of her disability and is pretty much normal by appearance. Leah has changed a lot too because she is now acting more like a native, specially now that she is married to anatole. Rachel is still self centered like she has always been so i think she has changed the least.
I guess they loved their father some what one of them often talked about wanting to burn him alive but would because of their mom. They followed what he said and believed because they didn't know better.

out of all the price girls, i have to say that adah changed the most. in the beginning of the book, she never talked and she walked crooked. now she talks and she walks like everyone else. she is also is attending emory college. she even thinks differently. she longer reads things from frot to back.
leah has also changed alot. she started out being a good christian girl and looked up to her father. now she lives as an african and no longer wishes to follow in her fathers footsteps.
Rachael has changed the least out of the 3 girls. she is still selfish and thinks of only herself.
I think that the price sisters loved their father and respected him but i dont believe that they cared for the way he was. they felt bad for what had happened but i think that they thoguth he deserved it.

None of the girls really changed that much. I mean Rachel is still arragant like her father. Leah has almost completely ignored her father and doesnt care for him anymore. Adah fixed her limp and has probably changed the most out of all of them.

I think the whole reason why tyhe author didnt let Nathan have a part in the book is because of this reason. The author wanted to show us the grls point of view and now the girls dont even really care, or show that they care when Nathan dies.

I really don't like Rachel because it seems that she hasn't changed at all. Why I think that is because she and always will only care about herself. She all mad at her sisters because they didn't ask her about Equatorial. The problem is her sisters her talking about more important manners. I think Leah has changed the most because she was all about god and now she is living as African Women. I really don't think that the girls cared about their father dieing. One of the girls even said that they wanted to burn him in the bed. The only reason she didn't is Because their mom was in it with him.

I despise rachel because still a selfish white preson. I think she has changed the least out of all them. Leah still live like a regular african women. Adah stayed the same but lives in america. i think of them all i think leah has changed the most why u ask, is that she is still in africa, and she hated it when she was young so thats why i think she changed the moste. adah changed to alot becous when she was young she had a limp and read a different way but know sshe dose nother but she want to be like she was when she was young.i dont think that reachel changed at all? becous she still only carees about her self. thay saytd that thats how the father wanted to die.

I would say that I still hate Rachel due to the fact she is still stuborn and now she smokes. I can identify to both Leah and Adah the best because the care about other people in different countries.
I thimk their father is a comlpete jack$#@, and that he needed to learn how to give up and stop being persistant. One of the girls said that Nathan wanted to be burned to death to die instead of dying naturally.

I think that Rachel is the one who has changed the least. She still has only one thing on her mind-- herself. Leah may seem very different because at the beginning she adored her father and she now despises him, but she still has the same passion about life. Adah has opened up a lot and is no longer crippled. Orleanna never forgave herself or her husband and keeps to herself. I depise Rachel and Orleanna the most, because it seems like they cannot overcome their own selfishness to make the best of their situation. I can relate with Leah mostly because she is just trying to do her best with what she has.

I think when they find out about their father's death they feel some justice has been done. It may bring some closure to their whole childhood. ALthough what they went through was obviously life- changing and it would be very hard to move on with life after an experience like that, i think that all the girls are selfish in some ways and blame all their unhappiness on their Father.

I think that Rachel did not change much she had the same attitude from the beginning of the book until the end. I think that leah changed the most because when she first came to the congo she loved going to church and did not know if the congo was a place for her, now with the twenty years after she is living there with nothing and struggling because she got so used to living like that. Adah now does not walk with a limp like she use to, but yet she does not like the changes she has gone through she liked who she was even though at times she got very frusterated!!

The Price girls changed a lot compared to what they were like when they first went to kilanga. Rachel who went from being a daughter of a mad preacher. Became a hotel owner in Africa. Leach thinks that she is an African. And Adah went to college in Georgia.

i would have to relate to Adah because i have had problems with my self of steam in the past i really despise l Rachel but i don't feel sorry for her either hypocritical that Adah wanted to burn Nathan in bed but didn't because her mother was in the same bed also because they went o the village that they stayed at for several years to visit Ruth mays grave but it was not there.

All of the Price girls have changed. All of them changed in different ways. For example Adah has always felt sorry for herself, but she has moved on from that and she went on to college and was very independent. But she stays the same because when she was young she had hated her dad and even when she grew up and left Kilanga she has still hated him so her feelings towards him haven't changed at all. Rachel is the same person overall but put in different situations and circumstances. She is successful. She owns the Equatorial. But she made it there by getting married multiple times. And i think the way she did it was sleezy. Because she was being a gold digger so in a way she doesnt deserve what she has. But personality wise Rachel hasn't changed a bit. As for Leah, she didn't really change, she just grew up and matured, so as we read on she was the same person, same thoughts and all. But with a more mature perspective on everything that has happened to her.
When I'm reading a book, when I get a first impression that i dont particularly like in a certain character I tend to despise them through out the whole book, and in this case its Rachel. I think I'd identify with Adah the most because I like how she took us by surprise when we find out that her problem was only psychological and not physical and she was able to change herself for the better with a confidence boost.
When it comes to Nathan, they all despise him. But Leah might not hate him as much as Rachel and Adah did. Because Leah used to look up to him, but Rachel and Adah never have.
I think it's hypocritical that the girls believe in what his mission in Africa was. But they are also happy he is gone.

Rutter said...

In my opinion Leah and Adah have changed the most. Both have done a complete 180. Leah, instead of criticizing people like she used to with her father. Is now helping people from Africa. The same Africans she used to despise.
Adah is now walking without a limp, and now reading normally. But I think she still wishes that she was the same old crippled adah, So she didn't have to do anything for herself.
Rachel is still the same Rachel. She still only cares about herself and her pathetic life with Axelroot.
All the girls pretty much hated their father. All except Ruth May that saw the innocent side of things.
